Pride Month Interviews: Meet Arlo Z. Graves

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you contribute to the horror genre.

While I waffle a lot about identifying myself as a disabled author (I am. I live with MCTD, hEDS, and I just found out about the endometriosis), disability and chronic illness absolutely plays a huge role in my horror. 

Horror is so important to me. It’s a way for me to process and explore things that terrify me, and living in an unstable body, that theme comes up a lot in my work. As does queerness.

What drew you to the horror genre?

Horror can be such a powerful tool to explore problems in the world and in ourselves. When horror is at its best, it’s saying something that might otherwise be difficult to articulate, in my opinion. Plus, there are so many flavors of horror, the possibilities are endless!

What are some areas of queer horror you think are under-explored?

Queer body horror and queer folk horror. 

What do you find scary within the horror genre?

The reality behind the allegory. Horror is often a mirror.
